So far in 2009, the Cubs closer situation has been one enigma. The Cubs are considered one of the richest teams in win expectation, so their closer is highly valued. So far it has been a back and forth battle between Kevin Gregg and Carlos Marmol.
Everyone expected the job to be Marmol's, but instead Gregg got it. Kevin Gregg then had problems and injuries and Marmol got the chance to take the job. He failed. He has two blown saves and several other bad outings.
So far the two closers have 5 saves, Marmol 2 and Gregg 3. Gregg secured his last save yesterday.
Currently the job belongs to Gregg, however his knee continues to be a problem for the Cubs and his owners. On the other hand Marmol has clearly been ineffective since the WBC and very inconsistent. His command has been terrible with 12 walks in 11 innings His WHIP is out of control at 1.73 and his ERA is a staggering 5.73.
Marmol is doing so poorly you have to consider cutting him. However, we expect him to rebound. There may be a trip to the DL in the future for Marmol, but give him May to work out his issues. If Gregg goes down, the job will be Marmols.
