Billy Wagner is set to return in the next few days and has looked outstanding in the minors, pitching seven shutout innings.

The rumors floating around are that not only will the Mets put him on waivers, but they will let his $10.5 million contract go if someone puts a claim on him. One of the teams that are rumored to want Wagner are the Philadelphia Phillies, believe it or not. With the huge failures of Brad Lidge and the inconsistent pitching of Ryan Madison, the Phillies are desperate to get a consistent closer and Wagner seems to be a perfect fit. Even if Wagner clears waivers, the Mets can trade him up to August 31.
Another rumor for Wagner is he could temporarily replace Francisco Rodriguez as closer for the Mets. Rodriguez has been terrible lately and with another blown save yesterday it's clear that the Mets need help in the bullpen again. Sounds like a broken record doesn't it? The Mets are running out of time to make the playoffs, so what they do with Wagner will tell everyone how they feel about their chances to make it.
Pick up Wagner if you have space on your roster. It is a big gamble, but one that could pay off for 10-12 saves assuming he goes to the Phillies or he could pick up a few saves with the Mets. I know the Mets and Phillies hate each other, but business is business.
