The Closer Report: April 29, 2010
Evan Meek came in and got the save for the Pirates in the 2-0 win over the Dodgers. We could be seeing a new closer in Pittsburgh.
With only one day one day left in the month, Matt Capps will win the month of April for most saves at 10.
SAVES:
Jose Valverde (7) - Valverde's WHIP and ERA are now below 1.00. He recorded his seventh save of the season by defeating the Twins 3-0. He gave up a hit and got a strikeout during the save.
Francisco Cordero (8) - A seven pitch save. No strikeouts and one hit. Not the flashy save, but definitely good enough.
Kevin Gregg (6) - Gregg remains on fire and frankly looks like a new man from the pitcher who lost the job last year. He whipped the Athletics tonight, striking out the side on 14 pitches. He WHIP 0.64 and ERA 0.82.
Evan Meek (1) - Got the call over Dotel to get the save. He looked outstanding cutting down the DOdgers 1-2-3 including a game ending strikeout. Dotel did pitch two innings yesterday and that was probably the reason Meek was used. However, don't be surprised if Meek gets another chance. So far Dotel has been terrible. He has a 10.61 ERA and have blown two saves in five chances. In 15 innings, Meek is 1-0 with 15 strikeouts, an ERA of 0.60, and a WHIP at 1.00
APPEARANCES
Jonathan Broxton - Another appeaance and no save. He did get a strikeout and his ERA is still 0.00.
Mariano Rivera - There was finally a Rivera sighting. He didn't get the save in the 4-0 win. Instead he got a strikeout and a rare walk in an inning of work.
Andrew Bailey - Got some work. Pitched one inning and looked great, disposing of the Blue Jays on seven pitches. All strikes.
Bobby Jenks - Entered the game 7-3 and finished the game 7-5. Jenks gave up two runs on three hits. The good news, he did strikeout the side. Bad news, he blew up his WHIP (1.89) and ERA (5.00).
Matt Lindstrom - Got an inning of work in a losing game. Gave up a hit and walked two, while striking out one. Not a good day for Lindstrom.
