Alfred Simon was recently bought up to shore up the Orioles bullpen and rumors were rampant that he would get a chance at closing. Trembley wasted no time getting his hot hurler into the, making his first appearance in majors since undergoing elbow reconstruction surgery last May. Before being called up, Simon was 1-1 with 1.59 ERA in four games with Norfolk this month.

I would have figured he would get time to adjust, but Trembley put him in the first chance he had and against the Yankees. It didn't start off to well for the 28-year old pitcher. He gave up a single to Swisher and walked Nick Johnson. He then egained his compose by striking out Derek Jeter, but then suffered an error C. Izturis that allowed a run to score. After giving up an RBI single to Teixteria, he got big Alex Rodriguez to ground out and earn his first save of the season.
Obviously he is a temporary closer with Mike Gonzalez on the mend and aiming for a mid-May come back. Until then expect Simon to get more save chances, but buyer beware. He is coming off of surgery and hasn't proven himself. He doesn't have overpowering stuff and his K/9 is low for a closer. I would temper my expectations for Simon, but get as many saves as you can from him.
