The Closer Report: May 15,2010
Matt Thornton got the call for the save over Bobbie Jenks. It was a move we expected and Thornton pitched very well.
Huston Street left his rehab appearance with an apparent injury after only five pitches. This is terrible news for Street owners. I'll keep you posted as to how it will effect his return.
SAVES:
Brian Wilson (9) - Recorded a tough save today. Wilson needed 39 pitches to get three out and loaded the bases before getting Matsui to fly out. His WHIP has blown up to 1.26.Manny Corpas (1) - Manny Corpas recorded his first save as the season wrapping up a 4-3 win for the Rockies. He looked great, retiring all three batters on 11 pitches.
Francisco Cordero (12) - Cordero was missing his spots and nearly blew the game today. He entered the game with a two run lead, and gave up a run on three hits before recording the last out. His WHIPERA now stands at 4.76 and that is trouble for Cordero.
Jonathan Broxton (6) - I told you that Broxton would start gathering up saves in bunches and he hasn't disappointed. He has five saves in the past eight days. Today was an easy 1-2-3 save.
Leo Nunez (8) - Nunez is another closer that got rocked today, but held on for the save. He gave up a run on three hits, but ultimately got the save
Matt Thornton (1) - I've been saying it all season, and it finally happened. Ozzie Guillen called on Matt Thornton to get the save for the White Sox. He faced two batters and retired them both. We will see if this move is for good or just short-term.
APPEARANCES:
Carlos Marmol - Came into a losing game and gave up a solo home run to Jeff Clement. Even worse, he recorded no strikeouts.
Jose Valverde (1-1) - Got the win in extra innings over the Red Sox. Pitched a perfect inning on 12 pitches for the win.
Jonathan Papelbon - Pitched an inning in a tie score. He gavwe up a hit and struck out two.
Rafael Soriano (2-0) - Ptched a near perfect inning to record his second win of the season.
