The Closer Report: May 19, 2010
Drew Storen made his first appearance of the season and scored his first win of his career. He entered the game with one out in the seventh inning and got the final two outs striking out one. He looked very good.
SAVES:
Carlos Marmol (7) - A great save for Marmol. He walked one and struck out two earning his seventh save of the season.
Octavio Dotel (9) - Dotel continues to deal it. Tonight he earned his ninth save on 10 pitches. He struck out one and gave up a hit. He looked outstanding, but did need a diving catch to end the game.Matt Capps (15) - Capps got back to saving games by earning his 15th save of the season. It wasn't perfect, he gave up a solo home run to Fernando Tatis. After that he quickly wrapped up the game.
Daniel Bard (1) - Got the save for Papelbon who had thrown over 60+ pitches in three appearances over four days.
Kevin Gregg (12) - Gregg had a tough save tonight, but he pulled it out. Kevin Sweeney almost took Gregg out for a three run homer, but it stayed in the park. He did walk one and give up a hit.
Brian Fuentes (5) - Got the save, burt not without fireworks. Gave up a blast to Paul Konerko and struck out Alexi Ramirez with the tying run on second base. Again, I'm waiting for the 1-2-3 inning in a save situation.
BLOWN SAVES:
Kerry Wood (0-2, BS1) - Don't cut Chris Perez too quick. Kerry Wood got absolutely hammered tonight and blew his first save of the season in his first save attempt since getting the job back. He gave up five runs on four hits and two walks. Just terrible. I don't know who's worse, Wood or Hoffman. OK, it's Hoffman, but still Wood is terrible.
Billy Wagner - (4-0, BS2) - Wagner's luck is terrible. He can't buy a save, but he has been pitching great baseball. Tonight he finally had a chance to get a save and he makes a mistake and gives up a long ball to Chris Heisey. The good news, he struck out two and got the win.
APPEARANCES:
David Aardsma - Looked very sharp striking out two and giving up one hit on 15 pitches.
