The Closer Report: May 5, 2010

CLOSER NEWS AND NOTES:
Mariano Rivera missed his third straight day with a sore left side.  It was a third straight save opportunity that he lost for the Yankees with his injury.
Ryan Madson will be a in cast boot for the next two weeks as he begins the healing process for his broken toe.
SAVES:
Jonathan Papelbon (8)  - Papelbon disposed of the Angels on ten pitches tonight in a perfect inning of work.  He looked very sharp and looked back to form after his last bad outing.
Brian Wilson (5) - Wilson finally got a save.  It was his first save since April 24.  He did give up a run on two hits.  Wilson is looking very human lately.  He did strike out two in the effort, but needs to start pitching better.
Andrew Bailey (5) -Pitched a perfect inning to record his fifth save of the season. It was his third save in May after only two in April.
Jon Rauch (8) - Gave up a solo home run to Alex Avila, but held on for the 5-3 save.  He did strikeout one in the process.
Octavio Dotel (5) - Two saves in as many days for Dotel.  He looked great tonight with two strikeouts and a perfect inning.
Billy Wagner (3) - Got another save and a badly needed one.  It was his third of the season, which is hardly any for Wagner.  He did get another strikeout and his WHIP is at a season low 0.90, which shows how effective Wagner has been.
Alfredo Aceves (1) - Got the save in place of the injured Rivera and the resting Joba Chamberlain.
BLOWN SAVES:
Francisco Cordero (BS2) - Blew another save tonight.  Gave up a run on two hits.  Its the second appearance in a row that Cordero has given up runs and he is 0-1 with a blown save over the last two days.
Chris Perez (BS2) - Perez got screwed by his defense.  He got the third out, but Luis Valbuena's error allowed the tying run to score.  Overall he gave up three unearned runs in the appearance, but did strikeout two.
APPEARANCES:
Brian Fuentes - Fuentes looked ordinary tonight.  Came into a losing game to get some work and gave up a bomb to Adrian Beltre.
Matt Capps (0-1) - Big bad Matt "The Capper" Capps gave up a run on two hits in the tenth inning of a tie game and took the 5-4 loss for Washington.  It was his first charged run since April 15.  It wasn't a blown save.
Matt Lindstrom (1-0) - Lindstrom picked up a big win for Houston.  He did walk two, but other than that gave up nothing else on 15 pitches.
Carlos Marmol - Got some work in and looked very sharp with a perfect inning.  Struck out two to add to his closer leading 27 strikeouts.
