The Closer Report: June 11, 2010
SAVES: Mariano Rivera (15), John Rauch (16), Chris Perez (6), Brian Wilson (16), Joakmin Soria (15), Ryan Franklin (11).
It was a slow night for saves with only five saves recorded on the night. Besides the long save from Chris Perez in a 7-2 game, the other four saves were big ones for some big time closers. Mariano Rivera continues his hot month with his 15th save of the season over the hapless Astros. He manhandled them for a 1-2-3 inning and two strikeouts. I would save that the last 4-5 appearances tells us that Rivera is back to full strenght and even better, NORMAL. Joakim Soria kept pace with Rivera getting a 11th inning save over the Reds. The Reds sweated him a bit with a few hits in his inning of work, but no runs.
Brian Wilson got a abnormal save tonight, working only a third of an inning to stop a late Athletics rally. With runners on second and third, Wilson entered the gave and struck out Cliff Pennington to end the game. It was his 16th save of the season and fourth of five in June. Jon Rauch also scored his 16th save of the season, striking out the side and doing it against the heart of the Braves lineup Heyward, Jones, and Glaus. He threw 16 pitches and looked his best this season. His fastball was unhittable, literally.
In a turn of events, Ryan Franklin awarded his owners with his first save since May 20 and his 11th overall. He pitched 1.2 innings and walked two, while giving up a hit. Since his last save on May 20, he worked eight scoreless innings with no saves and one win.
In the only bad news of the night, David Aardsma blew his league leading fourth save of the season giving up two run son two hits and a walk. Aardsma was hit very hard tonight and lacked any movement in his pitches.
