The Closer Report: June 17, 2010

The Closer Report by Todd Farino, thecloserreport.com

SAVES: Neftali Feliz (18), Joakim Soria (16), Francisco Rodriguez (15), Billy Wagner (12).

There wasn't allot of save action tonight, but there was plenty of closer action. Let's start in Chicago, where Andrew Bailey got one of those "BS" blown saves.  His manager decided to bring hist  closer in with the bases loaded and one out.  Bailey got a fly ball and a strikeout, but gave up the sac fly.  So his stats read .2 innings and a strikeout.  In the vacuum of that sad blown save, there was a silver lining for Carlos Marmol owners.  He pitched the top of the ninth and got the win.  He faced three batters, retiring two of them for his second win of the season.

Neftali Feliz record his 18th save of the season and his fifth in June with a 6-4 win over the Marlins.  He needed 17 pitches and faced the minimum number of batters, striking out one.  Feliz has been solid lately and is putting together a tremendous season.  He faced nine batters in the series with the Marlins and set them all down.  He should be a All-Star without a doubt and if he'd not I'd require a very goot reason why not.   KROD, Francisco Rodriguez kept pace with the Texas phenom,  recording his 15th save of the season.  He looked great striking out the side and bringing his strikeout total to 45.  Only 10 off the pace of closer strikeout leader Carlos Marmol.  In June, KROD is 6/7 in save opportunities.

Joakim Soria barely got his 16th save of the season beating the Astros 5-2.  He did have the tying run at the plate with two outs and Jose Guillen made a great catch to end the game that prevented more damage.  Soria struck out one and raised his WHIP to 1.17 for the season.  The last save of the night is Billy Wagner or as I know him, Old Man Wagner.  "I'm going to get you pesky ninth inning batters."
I don't know if Wagner is for real about retiring or not, but he still dominates National League batters.  Thursday night, Wagner needed just six pitches to close out the hard hitting Tampa Bay Rays 3-1.  That even included his 39th strikeout of the season.

In other appearances, Jonathan Papelbon entered a 8-4 game against the Diamondbacks and wasn't particularly spot on.  He gave up a run on two hits, while striking out two.
