The Closer Report: June 2, 2010
Huston Street threw 20 pitches at Colorado Springs (AAA) and reported no problems and felt great afterword. He will have a couple of more rehab appearances before being activated.
SAVES:
Jonathan Papelbon (13) - Got the save tonight, but made one mistake to Kevin Kouzmanoff. Not his best night giving up two hits and a run, but he got the save and added a K to his stats.
Brian Wilson (13) - Wilson had about the easiest save a closer could record in a full inning. He needed only eight pitches and and faced the minimum three batters. He was hurling tonight and looked unhittable. It was Wilson's ninth straight save and he is looking like the pitcher of 2009.
Kyle McClellan (1) - McClellan got the save for a resting Ryan Franklin. Franklin pitched two innings the day before and was getting so much needed rest.
John Axford (3) - Is he the closer or is he not the closer? Looks like he is getting the chance to close and recorded his third save of the season. He pitched 1.2 innings and gave up a run on two hits and struck out one. Axford is a desperation move for the Brewers. He's a 29 year old rookie with less then 18 innings of major league service. We'll see how long he can last.
Billy Wagner (9) - After accruing saves very slowly, Wagner has turned in on lately. He has four saves in the past five days and so far has two saves in June. Today he faced four batters and had little problems disposing of the Phillies. He also struck out his 33rd batter.
BLOWN SAVES:
Francisco Rodriguez (BS3) - On last nights show I discussed my concerns with Rodriguez's consistency. In the past two days he's given up a pair of runs and one cost him a save. Tonight he gave up three hits and a run in 2.1 innings of hard work, but the bottom-line is he blew the save. He did add four strikeouts, giving him 34 on the season. He will not come out for the save tomorrow.
APPEARANCES:
Jonathan Broxton - Pitched an inning in another 0-0 game. Gave up an hit, but got nothing else and got nothing else. A wasted inning for Broxton owners.
