The Closer Report: June 29, 2010
SAVES: Jonathan Papelbon (18), Andrew Bailey (15), Carlos Marmol (14), Brian Fuentes (14), Kerry Wood (8), John Axford 8, J.C. Romero (3), JJ Putz (2), Huston Street (1), Ronald Belisario (1).
Tonight was the biggest night for closers so far this season. In all, there were ten saves and two wins. Some of the saves were of the inordinate variety ad others were critical from a fantasy standpoint. Starting with Huston Street. He officially took over as the Rockies closer today and mowed down the Padres 1-2-3 with two strike outs. It was a very impressive first save of he season for Street and if you marked June 29 as the date he would get his first save of the season, then you win well, nothing.
Another mission critical save came from Carlos Marmol, who has sen plenty of action lately, but not many saves. He recorded his 14th exactly as Huston Street did. A 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. Finally, the last critical save was from Andrew Bailey, who helped out his owners with his 15th. Bailey was expected to save allot more games and record more strikeouts, but has so far failed on both. Tonight he closed out the Orioles on 14 pitches, striking out one.
In Boston, Papelbon was called in for a one out save and struck out Willy Aybar to close it out. Over in Milwaukee, every one's favorite moustache saved his eighth game of the season, but not without some excitement. Axford gave up a run on two hits, while striking out two.
ON the bad front, Leo Nunez blew his fourth save of the season, but managed to get the win. He gave up two runs on three hits, but was bailed out by his team in the bottom of the ninth. A more expected blown save came from Brad Lidge. He gave up a 3-run jack to Joey Votto, but like Nunez managed to get the win. J.C. Romero closed out the game after Lidge's sparkling performance.
Finally, Broxton owners lost another save for their beloved closer, while h gets some badly needed R&R. I couldn't be happier as a Broxton owner.
