The Closer Report: June 7, 2010 - Going back to old school
Over the weekend I decided to do The Closer Report the way I did it last year. I just didn't like the feel of the 2010 report, so I'm reverting it back to the 2009 style. Enjoy!
With a limited slate of games on the docket, there was still plenty of saves to go around. Starting in Chicago, the Cubs and Pirates played a makeup game and Sean Marshall recorded his first save of the season. The plans were for him to setup Marmol, but the Cubs put on two more runs in the ninth, so Marshall finished the game. He has quickly became one of the better setup men with a 1.91 ERA and 35 strikeouts.
Heath Bell continues to pitch well and rack up saves with his 16th of the season against the Phillies in a game where the Padres shouldn't have won. Getting no hit until the seventh inning, the Padres stormed back and gave Bell a two-run lead to play with. He gave up a run on two hits, but staved off the rally for the save. Bell's long lost brother and fellow West Division rival Brain Wilson also locked down his 15th save of the season in a 6-5 win over the Reds. Wilson had a easy 1-2-3 seven pitch inning to close out the game. Tonight's save was his third of the month and a nice comeback after the nasty blown save on Sunday.
Another Brian recorded his eighth save of the season and to all our surprise, Fuentes gave up no runs. As a matter of fact he looked outstanding, disposing of the Athletics in order and striking out two. Another closer that has Rodney Dangerfield written all over him, Chad Qualls got his eleventh save of the season in a 7-4 win over the Braves. It was Qualls first save in June and first since his last blown save, get it? Qualls is an enigma and frankly I'm not sure how he keeps the job. Oh wait, I know. The Diamondbacks refuse to sign Jose Valverde and have no one else. Keep rockin' Qualls with your 6.53 ERA and orbital 1.96 WHIP. By the way, he walked the bases loaded tonight.
As the Rockies await the return of Huston Street later this month, they certainly can't be worried with the outstanding performance of Manny Corpas. He locked down his seventh save since taking over the the overrated Franklin Morales. Tonight he had to stop a rally short and got the easy one out variety and did it the way of the K.
