The Closer Report: June 9, 2010
Tonight was a slow night for saves, but plenty of closer action. We will start with my favorite closer Jonathan Broxton. He saved his 16th game of the season and his 15th since May 7. With the pace that Broxton is on, he could legitimately push for Francisco Rodriguez's save record (I don't think he will, but the pace is there). He had a quick 12 pitch inning, but did give up a pair of hits and no strikeouts.
Matt Capps is the first closer to reach 20 saves. He notched number 20 over the Pirates 7-5. Capps saved the game for youngster Drew Storen, who got his second win of the season in relief. Capps pitched a near perfect ninth inning, giving up just one hit. It was his second save in as many days and a refreshing delight since Capps is coming off three blown saves last week. He did get his WHIP back below 1.50. Chad Qualls is on a roll with his 12th save of the season. Qualls struck out two and walked one in a rather good performance. Qualls has quietly saved three straight games and has saved six of his last seven with a win in the mix. On the other side of the country, Mariano Rivera closed out his 14th save of he season with a 4-2 win over the Orioles. He struck out one in a 1-2-3 inning. After a miserable May with only three saves, in June Rivera has already got four saves. He has clearly gotten stronger since the injury that sidelined him in early May.
In other appearances, Francisco Cordero entered a 6-3 game, and managed to give up a run on two hits, while striking out two. After Cordero's last two appearances, his ERA has jumped from 3.33 to 4.03. Though Cordero has a bunch of saves, he's clearly becoming unstable. If you are a Cordero owner, it's just the kind of consistency you have to deal with owning Cordero. Finally, Jon Rauch threw a quiet one hit inning to wrap up the Twins 6-2 win.
SAVES:
Matt Capps (20)
Mariano Rivera (14)
Chad Qualls (12)
Jonathan Broxton (16)
