The Closer Report: July 1, 2010
SAVES: Francisco Cordero (22), Rafael Soriano (19), Matt Lindstrom (19), Mariano Rivera (18), Octavio Dotel (17), Brain Fuentes (15), John Axford (9).
John Axford continues to be on a roll. Since June 22, Axford has saved five games and even more impressive no blown saves for the newly discovered closer. Odds are it's luck since in the five appearances he's given up two runs on five hits, and four walks. So John Axford owners beware.
Francisco Cordero scored his second save in as many days. He moved into a tie with Matt Capps for the league lead in saves. He put a couple of runners on, but had little problem with the Cubs. Marmol also made an appearance in this game, pitching an inning and loading the bases. The only positive was two strikeouts. One of my favorites this year, Matt Lindstrom recorded his 19th save of the season and struck out two int he process. Lindstrom threw a rare perfect inning, which he has now done three appearances in a row. He has also converted eight of his last nine save chances.
The king closer Mariano Rivera got his 18th save, and continues his scoreless streak to 15 appearances. Rivera has been incredible. He has made up for a bad May in a big way.
In two non-save situations, David Aardsma and Matt Capps pitched to different results. Aardsma gave up a 2-run bomb to Alex Rodriguez and took the loss in Seattle, while Matt Capps pitched a quality inning and got the win for Nats 2-1 over the Mets.
