The Closer Report: July 21. 2010
SAVES: Heath Bell (27), Jaokim Soria, Rafael Soriano (24), Matt Capps (24), Leo Nunez (23), Ryan Franklin (18).
There were some notable says tonight, though few saves in total. Heath Bell recorded his 27th save of the season after Billy Wagner failed to close out the Tommy Hanson win. Wagner blew his fourth save of the season by giving up three hits, including a solo blast to Scott Hairston. Heath Bell looked much more impressive, striking out the side and dropping his season ERA to below 2.00.
Leo Nunez notched his 23rd save of the season. He struck out two in a perfect inning of work. While Nunez lags behind the save leaders, it's worth to note his WHIPERA hovers hovers below 4.00 and he's a 20/40 closer. It's been awhile since we spoke about Matt Capps, but The Capper finally recorded a save (24), beating the Reds 8-5. He pitched 1.1 innings, while putting a couple of runners on. Capps is clearly on his way out of Washington by the trade deadline. Every time he goes out there, it's a grade card for Capps. The save was Capps' second save of the month.
Joakim Soria kept pace with Heath Bell with his 26th save of the season. Soria had a 5-2 lead, but did bring up the tying run to the plate beofre closing out the game.
Lets end on bad news. Bobby Jenks blew his second save of the season, giving up two runs on three hits. He gave up a two run single to Franklin Gutierrez. It was his second poor outing this week. So far for the week, Jenks has no saves and two losses. I believe Jenks in on the trade block for the White Sox. They will be looking to move Jenks and acquire another closer and other depth for their playoff run.
