The Closer Report: July 27, 2010
SAVES: Brian Wilson (30), Rafael Soriano (27), Matt Capps (25), Jonathan Papelbon (24), Octavio Dotel (21), Jonathan Broxton (20), Chris Perez (10)
There were plenty of big saves tonight and some very happy fantasy owners. To start, "J-Bro" Jonathan Broxton finally got his 20th save tonight closing out a 2-0 win over the Padres. He had a ten pitch, three batter inning and struck out one. He entered the 20/50 club with 58 Ks. Papelbon owners are frothing at the mouth right now. Papelbon has recorded three save in five days after a very slow month of July where he only had three saves in the first 22 days. Tonight he set the Angels done easily and in order on nine pitches.
Brain Wilson is the first member of the 30/60, notching his 30th save of the season in a 6-4 win over the Marlins. It wasn't without some pain as Wilson gave up a solo blast to Dan Uggla, but nothing more. He currently has 61 strikeouts and 29 walks.
Rafael Soriano kept pace with his goal (more like my prediction) to have the most saves this season. He got his 27th tonight over the Tigers 3-2. Soriano made it exciting by loading the bases, but in the end recorded 27 in 29 chances.
Chris Perez remained hot nailing down his 10th save of the season. Perzez looked sharp against the Yankees even though he gave up a pair of hits and brought the tying run to the plate in Alex Rodriguez. He didn't give up #600 and has looked great since taking over for Kerry Wood.
In injury news, Huston Street was hit with a line drive in his abdomen by a line drive. He is listed as daya-to-day and will not be going to the DL.
