The Closer Report: July 30, 2010
SAVES: Rafael Soriano (29), Matt Capps (27), Leo Nunez (25), Bill Wagner (24), Brian Fuentes (18), Aaron Heilman (4), Chris Ray (1).
None of the big name closers came out to play tonight, but many of my personal favorites closed out big wins for their perspective teams. Starting with Rafael Soriano, who closed out his 29th save of the season and needed only seven pitches to end the Yankees night. While he struck out none, Soriano has 11 saves this month and is easily on pace for 50, if he finishes the season strong. His strike out totals remain a huge dissappointed, but his change in style from coming after the batters to closing out games has worked for him to the tune of 29/31 save chances.
Matt Capps recorded his first American League save of the season and 27th over all. As predicted, Jon Rauch did not fair well in Minnesota and for teams that put their bullpen in his hands paid the ultimate price for investing in a cheap closer. Capps had little problem closing out the Mariners 5-3. In Kansas City, Alfredo Simon blew his third save of the season as he served up a walk-off three-run home run to Alex Gordon and took the 7-5 loss. Simon has been a nice surprise this season, but you have to take the good with the bad with cheap free agent closers. Today was the bad. Overall, Simon has been a great fantasy asset and a steal from free agency.
Billy Wagner is recovering nicely from a tough last week. He recorded his second save of this week and 24th overall defeating the Reds 6-4. He added two strikeouts in the effortless save, giving up a lone single in the process. Finally, Leo Nunez kept ahead of Wagner notching his 25th save of the season for the struggling Marlins. He closed out the red hot Padres 4-2 and raised his strikeout totals to 49. With 25 saves and 49 Ks, Nunez has been a great surprise for fantasy managers and is easily on pace for 40 saves.
