The Closer Report: July 7, 2010
SAVES: Joakim Soria (25), Francisco Cordero (24), Neftali Feliz (23), Matt Capps (23), Bobby Jenks (19), Billy Wagner (19), Kevin Gregg (19), Matt Garza, Phil Coke(1).
The Mexicutioner was at it again. He saved his 25th game in 85 Royals games this season. He struck out one during a perfect inning and continues his torrid pace. The AL All-Star already has five saves this month and nine in the past two weeks. Francisco Corder sweated through another save. He put on a few runners before ending the Mets night. As crazy as Cordero pitches, I'd take 24 blood sweating saves.
Matt Capps earned his first save since June 22 tonight closing out the Padres 7-6. It was a rough outing for Capps as he gave up a run on three hits before closing out the game. While he has only one save this month, Capps has fallen into three wins in July and is now 3-3 on the season. Neftali Feliz kept pace with Capps earning his 23rd save of the season in a 4-3 win over the Indians. While Feliz was a bit wild, he managed to dispose of the Indians with only a walk on 18 pitches.
Billy Wagner needed only 12 pitches and the end result was two strikeouts and his 19th save of the season. It was Wagner's third save in July after opening the month with a blown save. Wagner is clearly on pace for 40 saves, making his a sure thing sleeper steal.
In other news, Huston Street (1-0) earned his first win of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth inning of a tie game. Phil Coke and Matt Garza earned saves tonight as the normal closers were getting badly needed rest.
